  • Wainscoting (pronounced “Wayne’s-Coating”)/Wall Paneling (Accent Walls)

    • Today, the term wainscot — and the more common wainscoting — simply refers to some type of wall paneling that is used on the interior of a space and covers the lower portion of the wall. While it has a protective function of adding a layer over the wall material and paint, wainscoting's main purpose is decorative. Wainscoting provides the perfect mix of function and style by adorning the lower half of the walls while also protecting the wall from scuffs and smudges.

    • It is typically made from solid wood panels; however, you can use plastic, plywood, medium fiberboard (MDF), stone, tile, and acrylic. These walls make up an important part of interior design, helping add some warmth and style to space. Wainscoting is especially great at styling up bare walls that would otherwise look dull and boring.

    • Wainscoting vs. Paneling? In a nutshell, wainscoting is a type of decorative paneling. Whereas paneling can be placed from floor to ceiling — or even on the ceiling — wainscoting is typically limited to the bottom half or three-quarters of a wall.
